Juliet's First Halloween

Later that same night we stopped by the church parking lot-turned pumpkin patch to grab a carving-worthy pumpkin for Halloween.  (The Great Ehlke Family Pumpkin, for all its greatness, wasn't the carving kind.)

Juliet seemed excited about it.
Lydia was more interested in getting by the good light to show off her new do'.
Juliet, we mentioned, seemed excited about it.  I will say we pondered leaving the kids in the car while daddy went and got the pumpkin by himself.  (We were tired.)  Seeing Juliet's smile, and knowing it's her first Halloween, we knew it was the right thing to do to take all the kids out.  Someday Juliet will thank us.  She already did with that smile.
The next day we were ready for the carving.  Let's get the family portrait together here.
Ok that's about as good as we're going to get.  All the kids are in the frame, let's move on.
Mommy showed em how to scrape out the goopy stuff.
"EEWWWW!!"
Daddy got to cleaning the pumpkin while the girls focused on more important things like ruckus-making.
Juliet, it was her first Halloween.
She was very happy about this.  She always is, happy, about everything.
This picture sums up the entire evening best.  It's clear to see, things got a little chaotic.  One might say, a little out of hand.  We played spooky songs really loud.  Flying Purple Eater, anyone?  This helped impede clear communication between parental units, and enabled madness to take over the house and reign there.  True Halloween style. There was banging of utensils on pumpkins, banging of heads on tables, barking of dogs at squirrels, burning of pumpkin seeds in the oven, not to mention the old fashioned bossiness, stealing, crying, and loving.  But Heidi and I stayed calm.  Like any soldiers fighting the fight against the forces of darkness and toddlers, we had a mission, a purpose.  When it all started, "why are we doing this?", I asked.  "We have to get the token picture.  With the kids and a carved pumpkin."  Heidi said.  I agreed, and we forged on.

We got the shot.  The kids are in there somewhere, I promise.
There they are.  Hmm.  Maybe the first picture was better?
 Happy First Pumpkin Carving, Juliet.

The next day, Lydia the Kangaroo was excited to get candy.
We went to Gray Eagle to go trick-or-treating with the cousins and friends.  Daddy was also hoping the nicer neighborhood would lead to a bigger rake of candy.
We did our ding dong thing.
Evelyn the Kitty Kat was running and being a big four year old.
Lydia was mostly carried, being a heavy two year old, it worked out well for daddy's biceps.
Great job everyone, it was a beautiful, cool fall nite.

By the way Juliet was a monkey.  A super super cute one.  Seriously.  Happy First Halloween little monkey.  We love you.
